HOW do you practice? I’ve been trying to answer that question for a long time. Growing up, nobody told me HOW to “study”. So, I always needed to learn the techniques or strategies myself.

In this guide, I’ll break down how to answer AP World History MCQ questions with strategies that helped me and others score a 5.

How to Answer AP World History MCQ Questions Effectively

This is a lot more important than most people make it out to be. The fact that the MCQ is worth 40% of your score means that it will be a significant portion of the exam.

Time Management

Because you only have around 1 minute per question, you have to make sure you are continuously cycling through the test. This is to ensure that you have enough time to get through all the material. So, how do you do that?

The simple answer is to do TIMED practice exams. You won’t know where to improve on if you don’t time yourself.

Furthermore, it mimics the actual testing environment and tests if you can work under pressure. This is the only way to get more familiar with the MCQ and to improve your speed.

Momentum is key!

When you approach each question, you must identify whether you know the answer right away, you can find the answer within a couple of seconds, or it’s going to take more than a minute to answer the question.

For questions that are longer and require more in-depth analysis, make sure to mark those and come back later.

Types of AP World MCQ Questions

Knowing when to skip a question comes down to the type of question that you approach. On the AP World MCQ, there are 4 main types of questions. The infographic below gives a quick summary of each.

Types of AP World MCQ Questions

With the many different types of questions, you need to know which ones to do first and which ones to save for later.

From the infographic, we can see that the stimulus-based questions make up most of the text, and mostly consist of analyzing various sources. These questions will ask you to synthesize the information from these sources to and answer the questions pertaining to the historical context as well as the appropriate time period.

This is why you don’t only need to know what is happening in a given time period, but also know how to APPLY it to any given scenario.

For instance, in the image above, we can see that the question gives us a table and asks us follow-up questions based on that data. This fits the description for a data interpretation question.

Then, for Q32, it doesn’t ask you to analyze the data in this historical time period anymore (1778 – 1878). Instead, it wants you to relate the synthesized information from the table to ANOTHER historical time period that encompasses a similar event.

As you can see, knowing the application of each historical time period is just as important as memorizing the timeline itself.

Time for Each AP World MCQ Question

Obviously, this is quite subjective depending on your proficiency going into the exam. For those that are good at visual analyzation and able to synthesize sources, you should tackle the image/cartoon and the data interpretation questions first.

However, for the most of us, we probably aren’t as quick to get the passage after we read it once, and probably need more time to understand the material.

IMPORTANT: When you first go through the test, if you see any long piece of text, or image/cartoon question, skip it. Why?

As you can see above, the long-passage questions (stimulus-based) take around 80-90 s where as many contextualization questions take around 30-40s.

Go through the easier, individual multiple-choice questions first. Because those stimulus-based questions are very text-heavy and require a LOT more time, you don’t want to be wasting precious time analyzing them at the beginning.

Treat those easier MCQs as a warm-up for the hard questions you skipped at the beginning so you can get into the rhythm first.

Understanding the Answer Choices

If we look at the multiple-choice questions, most of them are designed in a way where two of them can be easily eliminated, while the other two are quite similar to each other.

The ones you can eliminate first are either one, outside of the historical context of that question, or two, irrelevant to the question.

After that, you are left with two answers, which you have to look very carefully at to choose the correct answer.

Often times, it will be explicitly stated, or implied in a single sentence within the passage. You just have to read the passage carefully and make sure you understand both historical context as well as the time period it’s situated in.

Let’s try an example.

In this question, we can infer from the caption of the image that this painting originated from 17th-century Ethiopia. Another important piece of information is that it depicts the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, so we know it has something to do with the spread of Christianity.

We can immediately eliminate choices B and D simply because they are not in the same historical time period as this painting.

First of all, the crusades were in a much earlier time period (1095-1291). Additionally, the Crusades were mainly active in Israel and Palestine, not East Africa. Ethiopian Christianity predates the Crusades and developed independently of them.

The Bantu migrations (roughly 1000 BCE–500 CE) are much earlier and completely unrelated to Christianity or this specific religious painting.

Lastly, between choice A and B, we have to read the answer choices very carefully.

Option C mentions the spread of Islam throughout East Africa, which is true, but the painting specifically mentions Christianity, specifically, the spread of Christianity. Therefore, this whole answer choice, regardless of what it says, is irrelevant to the historical context.

So, eliminating all other choices, the final answer is A.
